Some Birth Defects Connected to In Vitro Fertilization

It has taken 25 years for various studies to show that in vitro fertilization has been causing a variety of rare medical abnormalities in children such as: low birth weight, enlarged tongues and other organs, speech impairment and mental retardation, and cancer of the eye. An Australian study published in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that rates of birth defects were twice as high in children conceived by in vitro fertilization. Many medical professionals agree that this common, costly procedure, one of the methods of assisted reproductive technology has to be studied in detail.

Researches have found that the small differences in the amount of salt of amino acids used in the culture can cause certain genes in the embryo to behave unpredictably-- turning of when they should be on, or off when they should be on. The current trend exacerbates the potential problem by implanting embryos that are already 5 days old (used to be 1-2 days) and by using methods such as  injecting sperms directly into the egg which could be exposing the embryos to conditions  that could have a long-term health impact.
