According to Chinese medicine, the neuro-musculo-skeletal ailments manifesting as pain, soreness, and numbness of muscles, tendons and joints are due to obstruction in the circulation of oxygen and blood. The diminished nutrient flow leads to tissue and organ damage which can be corrected with acupuncture and herbs. This obstruction is initially caused by the invasion of exterior wind, cold, and dampness. In chronic cases, this obstruction is exacerbated by interior imbalances such as chi (energy) and blood deficiency. The strength of the climatic pathogenic factors and the body's chi (energy) and blood play a major role in development of any of the above listed conditions (in Chinese medicine they all fall into one category called Painful Obstructive Syndrome). The space between skin and muscles is where body fluids circulate in a form of sweat and where "defensive" chi moves, protecting the body.
Any of the painful obstructive syndromes can originate from any of the following: sitting on damp surfaces, running barefoot, wading in water, living in damp and windy environments (wind and dampness are considered the strongest pernicious influences), excessive exercise under stress, repetitive movements, bad dietary habits (leads to diminished blood and organ strength), accidents, emotional problems (anger, resentment, grief, shock, etc. lead to stagnation of chi and blood). Knowing about all these lifestyle factors, you finally realize why your back pain, neck pain, or arm pain have been chronic, and why massage, exercise, physical therapy have not helped to fully resolve it. In order to move towards recovery, one has to work simultaneously on both the inside and outside factors, using modalities such as acupuncture, herbs, good diet, moderate exercise and stretching, chi kung, and other therapies.
